what is osteoarthritis, osteoporosis & other musculoskeletal conditions?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a very common skeletal condition that can affect any joint, but mostly affects the spine, hips, and knees. Common symptoms are stiffness, pain, and clicking/crunching noises, which can lead to a reduced quality of life. It is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with over 1/3 of people over the age of 60 experiencing this condition, but sadly we are seeing more people negatively impacted from these conditions at a younger age.
This is the same for osteopenia & osteoporosis (OP), which is a bone disease identified by reduced bone mineral density and bone mass. It can lead to an increased risk in fractures due to a decrease in bone strength and loss of stress tolerance. It is a silent disease as there are typically no symptoms, and is the major cause of fractures in the vertebrae and hip. It is most common in Caucasian men and women, and Asian women. It can also be a secondary issue due to cancer treatment caused by long-term drug use (medicinal).
the cost of oa
The cost of OA is substantial, with a US study by the American College of Rheumatology (2015) stating the average lifetime medical cost for an individual with knee OA ranged from HK$1.6-1.8 million, with a further average loss of HK$32,000 in annual wages. This is a significant financial impact on anyone, and is only rising. But there’s a big “but” - and that is yes, there is something that you can do to change this forecasted medical future.
The recommended first line treatment for OA/OP of the hip and knee are: exercise, weight/nutrition management, lifestyle change, and education. Currently however, most treatments are focused on medications and eventually surgery. Our OsteoCare programme provides you with a proactive, long-term solution that focuses on your lifestyle goals rather than just the condition.
